When I read about the Memories and Thanks Blog Hop on Lori Anderson's blog, I immediately signed up. The Blog Hop honors Lori's friend Marianna but also anyone in our life (alive or otherwise) who means the world to us!
When Lori wrote how Marianna loved cardinal birds I knew immediately that I had to make a piece to honor my mother.
My mother left this world in 1998, but I think about her every day. She loved nature and had a kind heart. I truly think she has to be tending the gardens in heaven. She loved to watch the birds at the feeder and cardinals were ever present at those feeders. Mom had a lot of talent in the crafts - painting, sewing, embroidery, crochet - which is why me and my sister are both not shy about trying new things in the craft world. The picture of my Mom (above) is before I came along, but I've always loved this picture so much...so beautiful.
The picture below is of Mom when I was in grade school....this one in particular in the kitchen of the home I grew up in...the kitchen table was always the hotbed of activity between us girls!
So when I considered creating a piece of jewelry - a bracelet - I decided that it would incorporate some pretty cardinal beads I had been holding onto for some time.
I wanted to make this something special, so I spent some time creating a clasp that would pick up all the colors I would use in the bracelet - that being the colors of the cardinal - red, black and orange. I recently learned brick stitch, so I added a brick stitched toggle ring and a peyote stitched tube bar. I also used Czech pressed glass leaves and flowers, adding some greens and yellows for more color.
I wished my Mom could have lived to enjoy jewelry making. As much as she loved creative things I know she would have been working on jewelry right beside me. A recent snow storm in southern Illinois brought to mind a particular day when I was still at home, before elementary school. We had a big snow and Mom took me outside for some photos. The photo below is from that day. Love you Mom!
Thank you Lori, for organizing this event! You can follow the other participants in the Memories and Thanks Blog Hop - they are listed here:
